Founding and Milestones

Energizer Bunny with Keep Going tagline

In 1896, Conrad Hubert found the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing. The same year, National Carbon introduced a dry cell battery called the Columbia. Hubert used the dry cell battery to invent the hand torch (now called the flashlight). Besides the dry cell battery, the hand torch housed a bulb and a brass reflector inside a paper tube. Two years later, Hubert’s company merged with National Carbon. Subsequently, the company changes its name to American Ever Ready.

In 1914, the company shortened the name to EverReady. Fast-forward to the 70s. EverReady created the Energizer brand to market its premium alkaline batteries.

For over a century, the company has provided consumers with a long list of innovations. Besides portable lighting alternatives, it introduced batteries for smoke detectors and transistor radios. The brand is also credited with offering the first watch battery and the first hearing aid batteries. Other firsts include cylindrical alkaline batteries and zero-mercury alkaline batteries. Also, Energizer is the first brand to introduce AA lithium and high-energy NiMH rechargeable batteries.

Energizer asked Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton to become its spokesperson in 1980. Her energetic performances fit right in with the brand. She remained the spokesperson until 1987. In 1989, the Energizer Bunny hopped on board. He symbolized longevity, perseverance, and determination. Several commercials appeared with the energetic pink percussionist wearing sunglasses and flip-flops. He beat his drum repeatedly while wreaking havoc on what seemed like normal commercials. Later the bunny would mock the competition. An article featuring the advertising campaign described the rabbit as never running out of energy. Soon people were using the name as a metaphor. And by 2006, the Energizer Bunny was listed in the dictionary. The definition: ‘A persistent or indefatigable person or phenomenon.’ It was also named one of the ten best brand icons of the 20th century.

Rewind to 2001. The Energizer company developed the EZ Change battery dispenser. The product made it easy to insert batteries into hearing aids. In 2004, the brand debuted the first AAA lithium battery for wireless headsets. And in 2006, the company released the Energi To Go, a battery-operated cell phone charger.

When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Energizer partnered with the Red Cross. Not only did the company donate funds to help victims, but they also provided batteries and flashlights for relief workers.

In 2006, the company established the Keep Going Hall of Fame. The foundation honors ordinary people with the spirit, drive, and determination to make a difference.

In 2009, the brand had another breakthrough. It developed PowerSeal technology. This innovation stopped batteries from leaking. By 2012, the brand released MAX batteries with PowerSeal Technology. The batteries maintained power for up to 10 years, even when not in use. Three years later, the company introduced its first eco-friendly battery. Named EcoAdvanced, the batteries comprised 4% of recycled batteries. In 2021, the brand announced its commitment to using more recycled content in its rechargeable batteries.

Energizer launched a solar awareness program in 2012 to help families without electricity. In 2013, the company introduced its first child-resistant packaging to prevent kids from swallowing lithium coin cell batteries. In 2014, it announced its No-Leak Guarantee to address and resolve a common battery problem.

Today, the brand continues to develop groundbreaking products like portable generators and lighting accessories.

Production and Manufacturing

The Energizer headquarters

Energizer has 22 production plants on four continents and employs 17,000 people worldwide. The company produces over six billion battery cells a year and has positioned itself to meet consumer demands for alkaline batteries and eco-friendly alternatives. The brand expects rapid growth and has over 800 patents pending.

Manufacturing

Worker handling batteries in the Asheboro, North Carolina factory

Currently, there are six operational facilities in the U.S., including Missouri, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.

At one million square feet, the Asheboro, North Carolina plant is the largest producer of batteries in the U.S.

Singapore is home to its largest plant. It produces over two billion cells a year. The facility has existed since 1946 and primarily serves the company’s Asia and Oceania markets. It is also the only plant outside the U.S. set up to produce alkaline and lithium batteries.

To make the batteries, steel cans go through a wash and dry cycle machine to remove impurities. Meanwhile, bags of manganese dioxide are placed in a hopper. This compound gets mixed with graphite and other ingredients. A machine drops the cathode material into the steel cans as they move along a conveyor belt. The machine also molds the cathode material to the inner diameter of the can. To avoid short-circuiting, thin sheets of specialized paper are placed inside the can to separate positive and negative electrodes. Next, anodes and electrolytes are added. Then, a current is inserted into the anode to complete the circuit. The bottoms are then crimped and sealed, finishing the negative side. Then the batteries are turned over to complete the positive side. Afterward, a machine puts labels on the batteries, and a worker visually inspects them. They are tested for voltage and current before packaging.

At this time, Energizer doesn’t manufacture its own Power Stations. That job is sourced to a Tawain company called TennRich. Currently, TennRich uses lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4) to make Energizer Power Stations. The LiFePO4 is said to have four times the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. TennRich has worked with the company since 2009 and is licensed to manufacture all of the brand’s power stations and power banks.

Key Facts

From product development to packaging, Energizer is committed to producing products that make life easier while reducing the impact its products have on the environment. The company’s ESG plan addresses product sustainability, environmental responsibility, social responsibility, community impact, and corporate governance.

The brand has earned the Call2Recycle Leader in Sustainability Award in Canada and a Nordic Swan certification in Europe. Energizer reduces damage to the environment by recycling and manufacturing rechargeable batteries. In fact, it is the first company to use recycled content in its rechargeable batteries that may have otherwise wound up in the landfill. In 2021, the company spent over $10 million on battery recycling initiatives and supporting safe recycling programs. In Europe, the brand created a recycling machine that issues customers vouchers for future sales when they put old batteries into the machine. The company partners with Earth911 and Call2Recycle to raise awareness and reduce the carbon footprint of its products. It also works with the Corporation for Battery Recycling (CBR), Portable Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA), and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

Besides making long-lasting lithium batteries, Energizer produces batteries with PowerSeal and Smart Seal technologies to prevent leaks. And its portable lighting products operate with LED bulbs, which keep them running for up to 10 years or more. The company uses recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for its labels and corrugated cardboard for packaging to house its batteries during shipping.

The company plans to create landfill-free manufacturing facilities and tracks its waste and water usage. To date, it recycles 42% of its waste. The Asheboro, North Carolina, plant recycles about 90% of its waste each year.

Also, Energizer has found solutions to reduce water usage and recycle wash water, which saves over a half-million liters of water each month. And at its headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, the company has turned over 112,000 pounds of food waste into composting material.

Besides creating a safe work environment, the company encourages employees to participate in campaigns that make a positive impact on the community. In addition to matching donations of employees’ choosing, the company increases contributions to a 200% match during times of disaster. The company also supports Feed the Children.

Warranty Information

Warranties differ depending on the product. Select alkaline batteries, for example, come backed by a no-leakage guarantee. The company will replace or repair any device that became damaged due to leakage within two years of purchase.

The Power Stations are warranted through TennRich, the manufacturer of the brand’s portable power stations. However, the exact terms of the warranty are unclear. The company warrants accessories like cables and adapters for one year and explicitly states that it warrants specific Energi-To-Go models for two years. But it does not spell out the terms for Power Stations. You can view the warranty information here.

You can also find the warranty information in the manual that accompanies the product.
